WELCOME TO OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY!

What Is START?

START is our orientation program for incoming students. Whether virtual or in-person, students will be introduced to OSU resources that have the power to help them academically, financially, socially, and healthily. They will spend the day with our amazing START leaders, engaging with other new students, and meeting with their academic advisors. We also have a separate program for families; going over OSU resources, how to support your student, and how to deal with the transition of sending your student to college.

    • Advising Days: July 24th - 26th
  • September 6th - 13th
    • Advising Days: September 11th - 13th

Can’t make it to Corvallis? No worries! Virtual START combines all information from the in-person sessions and more into an asynchronous learning experience. Virtual START is administered through Canvas, an online learning platform you will be using a lot of here at OSU. With about 2-3 hours worth of content, you can click through this Canvas course at your own pace. You will have a week to complete the main content and set up a meeting with your advisor, to take place sometime during the scheduled advising days. The course opens at 10am and closes at 5pm (PST) on their respective days.

You'll find these sessions under 'other options' in your Beaver Basecamp.

*Important* Additional Information

Students will meet with their advisors during day two (2) of START at the time they scheduled the day prior. These meetings will take place sometime between 8:00am and 5:00pm. We ask that you please schedule your travel plans accordingly to account for the possibility of an afternoon meeting time.

To ensure fairness and support students awaiting financial aid awards, we're adjusting our May sign-up process this year. After the June 1st commitment deadline, we'll open up another round of spots on June 3rd, giving everyone a way to secure their START session. This ensures equal opportunity for participation, regardless of award status.

Beaver Basecamp does not show START sessions when:

  • registration hasn't opened yet
  • the session is full
  • the session has locked (10 days prior)
    • Sessions lock to ensure we have the time needed to prepare for each session. We are unable to make changes to the registration form (housing, guests, etc.) when this happens. If you need to cancel a session that is locked, please reach out to the Office of Student Orientation via phone or your ONID email address.
  • Students will room with another student, based on the preferences they indicate on the START registration form, in one of our residence halls. This process reflects University Housing and Dining Services' (UHDS) housing application and roommate selection process.
  • Families/Guests will stay together in a room, with a lock, as part of a suite in a different residence hall than their student. This suite will be shared with families/guests of other students.
    • In other words: private room, shared suite

*If you are traveling more than 50 miles from campus, we are able to provide housing for the night before your scheduled START session for both students and guests, first-year or transfer. If this applies to you, it will automatically be available to you when you register for START. Housing rates still apply.*

START fees will be billed to your student account about a week after you attend your scheduled orientation session. These will be due at the same time fall tuition is due.

At Oregon State University, we are committed to supporting our military service members, veterans, and their families as they transition into higher education. As part of this commitment, we offer fee waivers and discounts for various programs and sessions.

FEE WAIVERS

Military service or affiliation with a service member may qualify you for a fee waiver. Complete the following questions on our sign-up form to check eligibility. Answering "yes" to any of these questions may qualify you for a $10 student fee waiver.

  • Are you now or have you previously served in the U.S. military?
  • Are you the spouse or dependent child of a current or former service member of the U.S. military?
  • Do you plan to use a VA education benefit or military tuition assistance?

DISCOUNTS

In addition to fee waivers, we offer discounts for veterans attending in support of their students. If your student answers "yes" to the second question above and you are accompanying them, you may be eligible to receive the following discounts:

  • First-Year Families: Fee reduced to $65 from $80.
  • Transfer Families: Fee reduced to $50 from $65.

HOW TO APPLY

To apply for a fee waiver or to receive a discount, please indicate your eligibility on the sign-up form when registering for a session on Beaver Basecamp. Our team will review your responses and apply the waiver or discount accordingly.

Once you've registered for a START session, you should have access to Beaver Hub (it may take up to 48 hours to activate). There, under the "Success Team" tab, please schedule an appointment with your academic advisor so that you may register for classes before summer term begins!

OSU continuously opens up more spots/times of common classes all first-year students need to take throughout the summer to account for those attending later START sessions. No matter when you attend START, OSU guarantees a full set of classes that will go towards your degree requirements.

No, you do not need to have anyone set up on your Beaver Hub team before attending START. Our START program is designed to guide you through all necessary steps, including team setup, during your orientation session.

No, you do not need to reach out to an advisor to schedule registration separately. Both advising and registration processes are integrated into the START program. You will receive guidance and assistance from advisors during your orientation session.

Advising and registration take place during your START session. You will have dedicated time with advisors who will help you plan your academic journey and assist you with registering for classes.

*START is required before you are able to meet with your advisor.*

Please reach out to us, the Office of Student Orientation, if you have any questions about START!
