FAQs

Yes!  Students and their families will be able to choose to add on a residence hall stay for either before or after their START day, or both!  They'll also be able to choose from the following options:

  • $35 per person per night for "bathroom down the hall"
  • $45 per person per night for "bathroom in the suite"

Virtual START will be fully asynchronous for students.  They will be able to complete all required content and modules in their own time and at their own pace.  There will be plenty of opportunities to engage in synchronous events like socials, 1:1 connections with a START Leader, and advising, which student can plan out at their own scheduled times.  All central content is hosted in Canvas and Discord and will be available to view in mid-June to all colleges and any partners who request access.

Small groups with a START Leader are a way for us to engage all three of our goals of START: academic, social, and culture of OSU orientations.  The group is structured as a campus tour with stops along the way to discuss campus resources, share START Leader stories of their favorite spots and successes, and introduce new students to the culture of OSU.  The content covered is far reaching, from parking your car on campus to football games to wearing orange on Fridays.  Staff also talk about key campus partners and resources as a way to introduce and normalize help-seeking, prioritize important resources for new students, and support connection and belonging.

An experience group is another opportunity for new students to meet with a different START Leader and learn more about a particular aspect of campus life that they're interested in.  This will happen over the lunch time and is tied to a START Leader's experience at OSU.  While the topics do change from year to year, they usually include research opportunities, Greek life, international student connections, campus jobs, students of color, and LGBTQIA supports on campus.  These are not presentations about these topics, but meant as conversational opportunities for START Leaders to facilitate engagement around a specific topic and foster connections between students interested in those areas.

The formal goals of START are:

  1. We empower students to succeed in their academic and social environments at Oregon State.
  2. We prepare families to support their students in their first year at Oregon State.
  3. We make connections with new students and help them develop a sense of belonging at Oregon State.
  4. We introduce the culture of Oregon State University to incoming students.

We think of START as a three-legged stool, balancing equally on academic orientation, social orientation, and the culture of OSU orientation.  Supporting parents and families through their own transition helps us achieve all three of these goals holistically.

Yes!  Both of these sessions have the same content as any other START session, but they are supported by faculty and staff across the university and aim to help students find belonging during their orientation process.

  • We are pleased to present Bilingue again this summer, our START session where content is presented in both English and Spanish for families.  This will be held on Sunday July 10 in conjunction with First-Year Session #5.
  • Additionally, we are partnering with the Dr. Lawrence Griggs Office of Black & Indigenous Student Success to host a START session aimed and supporting our black and indigenous new students.  This will be held on Saturday July 23, in conjunction with our First-Year Session #9.

Students do not have to pay an additional fee for in-person or virtual START.  They can choose to stay in the residence halls for in-person START, which will incur a charge.

This year at START, we will have a job application station for students to fill out job applications at the end of their START day.  We know you all need to hire students and students want a job when they begin in the fall, so here’s what you need to do to participate.

  1. Write your job posting so that it’s as easy for students to apply for as you can make it.  We love postings that are either application only or application and resume only.  If you need a supplemental question or two, that’s ok if needed.
  2. Post your job so it is available during this summer’s START.  Our first START session begins June 23 and our last one ends on September 9, so please keep your job open for at least three weeks during that period.  If you can keep it open longer or repost it later as well, all the better!
  3. That’s it!  If you want to also create a flyer to have available for students to pick up, we will have space for that too.  Please submit paper copies of flyers to Waldo 102 for inclusion in this effort.

During this part of the START day, we will have laptops available for students to use to apply and will have a board to let students know which jobs are included in this effort.  Certainly all jobs open during this time will catch students’ attention, but we’ll highlight the ones that meet point number one above.  As a reminder, there will be both first year and transfer student START sessions, as well as virtual START students who will be encouraged to look at your postings as well.
