First-Year Student

A first-year student is a student admitted to OSU with less than 24 transferrable credit hours and/or has graduated from high school within the last year. New Student Programs & Family Outreach strives to assist you with your transition to Oregon State University. One of keys ways we do this is through our orientation process.

  • First-year students starting OSU- Corvallis in the Fall or Summer term will need to attend a START program during the summer. This is a required two-day orientation program where you will receive academic advising, register for fall term courses, learn about resources helpful to your transition, and meet fellow new students.¬†International students who are able to be in-country during the summer months (June-August) should sign up to attend an on-campus START session to receive academic advising and class registration. You will still be required to attend the international orientation session in September to complete the rest of your international requirements. International students who are not able to be in-country during the summer months will attend both the international orientation and will receive academic advising/registration in September. More information can be found online here.
  • First-year students starting OSU- Corvallis in Winter or Spring term will attend a Term Orientation program. These are one-day programs that focus on academic advising, registering for courses and learning about resources relevant to your transition. International students entering winter or spring will have advising and course registration as part of their New International Student Orientation.
